Thailand, also known as the 'Land of Smiles', is a beautiful country located in the tropics of Southeast Asia. Thailand is known for its amazing Buddhist temples, breathtaking beaches, and busy cities. Thai is Thailand's official language and the country has a population of 69.04 million. Some of the most famous locations in Thailand are the temples of Wat Arun, Wat Pho, and the Emerald Buddha Temple. You will fall in love with this country as you serve, learn about the Thai language and spend your weeks in the heart of Thailand.

Thailand currently has a poverty rate of 7.9%, and poverty has declined substantially over the last 30 years from 67% in 1986. Economic and social growth has been significant, though economic growth has stalled in recent years.

Inequality, maternal and infant health, education, infrastructure, and access to health care remain barriers to development in Thailand. According to the Asia Development Bank, for every 1,000 babies born in Thailand approximately 11 die before their first birthday and the maternal mortality rate is 20 deaths for every 100,000 live births. In education, Thailand has a persistent education gap with children generally having access to about 8 years of schooling before their 18th birthday.

Explore the traditional Thai countryside and learn about the culture as you visit some of the most beautiful places in Thailand. You will learn how to cook traditional Thai food in a Thai cooking class in the city of Krabi. You get to learn about Buddhism as you walk the grounds of local Buddhist temples, and hike to the Tiger Temple Cave to see a stunning view that words cannot describe. Your adventure will continue as you island-hop and see some of the most picturesque beaches the world has to offer. Don’t worry, as you trek each of these islands you’ll get plenty of opportunities to take a dip in the warm Gulf of Thailand while you snorkel with the beautiful wildlife. Lastly, you will get to visit an Elephant Sanctuary where you get to feed and bathe elephants that will love you almost as much as the Thai people.

Since there is no completed temple in Thailand, you will serve in the Taipei Taiwan Temple on the way home. However, the future site for a temple to be built in Bangkok was dedicated on January 26, 2019.

Thailand was an agricultural country until the 1960’s when many people moved into the capital of Bangkok, which started the development of metropolitan areas in Thailand.

Thailand was officially known as Siam until 1939. Thailand never succumbed to European rule but was under the control of an absolute monarchy.

Thailand’s tropical climate produces temperatures in the 80’s with high humidity and three distinct seasons. The hot season is during the months of March to May while the cool season is from November to February. The rainy season is from June to October. Therefore, be prepared for rain as HEFY will be serving in Thailand during the rainy season.

There are 127 national parks and 22 of them are marine national parks. One of the most popular parks is Khao Yai National Park where you can see incredible wildlife. Khao Phing Kan is home to James Bond Island where a James Bond movie (The Man with the Golden Gun)  was filmed.
