Join us this summer!

If you sign up as an Adult Builder, that automatically reserves a spot for a Youth Builder (between the age of 16-19 ) that you are related to to come also!

Who can be an Adult Builder?

Adult Builders must be related to a Builder - either a parent, sibling, first cousin, aunt, uncle, or grandparent. They must be at least 35 years old and hold a current Temple recommend (exceptions will be made on a case by case basis - email if you have any questions). Additionally, for the safety of our Builders, each Adult Builder will be required to undergo an extensive background check. In the event that you do not pass the background check, both you and your Builder will forfeit your spots on your trip.

What does it mean to serve as an Adult Builder?

This is a rare opportunity to serve alongside wonderful youth doing international humanitarian work while sharing unforgettable moments. The Adult Builder is 1 of 2 adults who support the Trip Leaders. HEFY benefits greatly from your life experience to help us ensure the trip is a success and that there are spiritually strengthening experiences throughout! BONUS: If you sign up to be an Adult Builder, you can add one of your relatives to the trip you are going on!  This is a great way to ensure that your child, sibling, cousin, niece, nephew, or grandchild gets a spot on a trip.

What are some duties of the Parent Builder?

Support your Trip Leaders in any way needed

Assist in "herding the sheep." Help the Trip Leader gather the youth for breakfast, meeting the bus, devotionals, etc.

Work alongside and mentor youth

Foster an inclusive and positive environment

Help keep the group healthy and safe

Be a friend to all the youth

Keep up with the fast "teenage" pace of the trip

Set an example for the youth of giving yourself entirely to this experience

 How do I qualify?

  • You must be a related to one of the youth attending the trip
  • Current temple recommend holder to help with the temple trip (If you are not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, you can still serve as an Adult Builder with us! Please contact us at to find out how.)
  • Healthy enough to handle a teenager pace with long days of hard physical work and activities
  • Create a login and apply online!

 Are there any limitations?

  • Because of the rigorous pace and strenuous nature of the expeditions, we recommend the program for relatives in good health. If you have physical or emotional limitations please be sure to be upfront and honest with us. We would love to work with you and can possibly adjust your responsibilities to help you have the best experience. When filling out the health information, please be honest and as thorough as you can.
  • No husband/wife couples on the same trip: Our focus is building total unity among the youth. We want to avoid an "exclusionary family” dynamic

 Experiences of 2018 Parent Builders

“I got a front row seat watching my son truly come “out of himself”...loving the local people and serving with all the energy of heart. I have never seen him work so hard, love so much, or make friends so quickly. It was transformational and miraculous for both of us... I would highly recommend this experience to any parent considering a service trip with one of their children. The trip leaders were absolutely incredible and truly cared about every single person on the trip. I was in awe at the responsibility that they embraced. My son has made life long friendships both here and in Argentina; he really learned how to love through hard work and service...I will be forever grateful for HEFY!”  - Camille, Argentina 2018

“It’s easy to feel Christ near when your focus everyday is service. I was invigorated to bring this feeling home to my wife and other children. Lastly, I feel it greatly improved my relationship with my daughter and it was a miracle to see her come closer to the restored gospel and its standards. Thank you for the opportunity to serve with this program. I hope to do it with all four of my children.”  - Adam, Samoa 2018

“It was an amazing experience! I'm not only more grateful for what I have, but I have a greater desire to share the gospel and to help others in need. I can't wait to serve a mission with my husband! I've also decided to become a Pathways English tutor so I can do a little more to help now.”  - Jeanette, Guatemala 2018

“This experience touched me deeply as I connected strongly with the people we met in Mozambique and my goal was to really connect with and get to know each builder there. I did this and felt a strong connection to each one of these kids. I feel like they are my own kids. I miss every one of them terribly, and have the most endearing memories from this trip. I love that I have new friends. I felt my testimony grow and I really enjoyed the spiritual moments during this trip. I loved the schedule and having scripture study every day. I'm so grateful I got to go and serve with all these kids and I consider it to be one of the best things I've done. (And I've done a lot of things in my life!)”  - Jen, Mozambique 2018

 Costs and Fundraising?

All Parent Builders are required to pay the same participation fees as youth and will be required to complete the same application form. The cost will vary according to the location. Don't feel daunted by the cost! This may seem overwhelming since there will be two members of the family attending, but there are so many ways to raise money in your community. Here are some ideas for Fundraising:

  1. Have your relative be the face of your fundraising: Your relative attending the trip with you can help do fundraising for both of your trips. As your relative goes about fundraising, have them change their letters and requests to saying, “My [relative] and I have a great chance to share a humanitarian experience together,” or “My [relative] and I get to go on a once in a lifetime service trip, and we want to make it more affordable.” Those who are planning to donate for your relative will likely be more generous when they learn that both of you will be attending the trip. Sample letters, donor record form, 501(c)3 letter and instructions on how to donate can be found in the Fundraising Packet.
  2. Investigate corporate gift matches: Many companies have a gift matching program that match charitable donations made by employees. Since HEFY is a 501(c)(3) organization, donations you make toward your expedition qualify for charitable donations and can be matched by your employer. See the attached 501(c)(3) approval letter for our tax ID number and other information you may need to apply for a gift match.
  3. Birthday/Christmas: Ask for family/friends to donate to your expedition instead of traditional gifts.
  4. Local franchise fundraisers: Look up several franchises that have donation/fundraising programs.
  5. More ideas in the Fundraising Packet.
