OVERVIEW

Youth Summit Jerusalem (YSJ) is an immersive youth program held in the beautiful country of Israel, known and beloved to many as the Holy Land. YSJ will be an immersive cultural experience every day as you adventure through the desert wilderness, explore sacred sites in the region of Jerusalem, and engage in service opportunities with local communities. The Holy Land is important to people of all faiths throughout the world. Come find out why it's important to you.

This program is designed to be academically rigorous and challenging, one that will require a significant amount of study and preparation prior to departing. Your time in the Holy Land will stretch and challenge you as you engage in deep learning through experience and effort. Through service, learning, and group experiences, you will learn more of the complex geopolitical climate. You will also become acquainted with the diverse backgrounds and religions who are represented in the area. With support from your trip leaders, you will work in teams to dig into the scriptures, sharing what you have learned as you come to know these people of the past. As you feel yourself stretching, you will realize that for the rest of your life, you will carry a piece of Jerusalem in your heart.

*Be advised that this trip will require a lot of walking. Each person will walk approximately 8-10 miles per day through the Old City of Jerusalem and surrounding areas. We encourage those with any medical conditions that could possibly hinder walking such distances to consult with their physician before signing up for this trip.

Kids4Peace

Kids4Peace brings together Jewish, Christian, and Muslim youth to build trust, bridge divides, and create justice in the city they share. Through hands-on learning and service, we will make lasting friendships and join them in their mission to connect across religious and social divides. Throughout this experience, you will feel more empowered and energized to become an agent of change in your own community.

THE HOLY LAND

Embrace this once in a lifetime opportunity to walk in the Savior's footsteps. From Shepherd's fields in Bethlehem to a boat on the Sea of Galilee, the scriptures will come alive. As we trace the path from the Garden of Gethsemane, walk through the streets of Jerusalem to Golgotha, and end at an empty tomb, you will experience something personal and sacred that you will remember for the rest of your life.

*Note: All info subject to final adjustment.

REGISTRATION

Due to the increased academic nature of Youth Summit Jerusalem, applications have become more competitive for participants and parent coaches alike. In order to be selected for YSJ here is what you need to do!

1) On your age group's day of your registration, open the registration page and you MUST select YSJ as your #1 choice on the registration lottery page. This will send your name to the YSJ applicant pool. If you are interested in also applying for an HEFY trip(s), you will select any HEFY trip(s) you might want to attend afterwards.

2) You MUST complete the separate YSJ 2020 application found below. Note: You will be required to write a 500-750 word essay for this year's application.

**The application process with YSJ is rolling admissions, which opens October 14! Regardless of your age and registration day, you will have access to the YSJ application form. However, you still can only register in the HEFY system on the day that your age group is allowed. We just want to give you the chance to fill out the application as soon as possible. Take your time, write your essays well and turn it in no later than November 1, 2019 at 11:59 MST for priority placement!

**IMPORTANT: If you get selected for an HEFY trip, that does not eliminate your spot on a YSJ trip! Because our team will be reviewing the essays within the applications, notifications for YSJ will come out later than the HEFY trip selection. If you are selected for a YSJ 2020 trip and you have already been selected for an HEFY trip, you will have the option to remain on your HEFY trip or you can switch to the YSJ trip!

YSJ FAQ:

Is Youth Summit Jerusalem an HEFY trip?

YSJ shares a parent organization with Humanitarian Experience for Youth and is based on the same guiding principles: creating strong group bonds, deepening individual connection with God and the Restored Gospel, and seeking to understand and love people of other cultures and faiths.

I'm interested in both HEFY and YSJ trips. Can I apply for both?

The short answer is yes! If you are interested in both, you should definitely sign up for an HEFY trip, as well as apply for YSJ. But this year is a little different on the application process due to the changed HEFY lottery registration. Here's how its going to work...

If you are selected for a YSJ 2020 trip and you have already been selected for an HEFY trip, you will have the option to remain on your HEFY trip or you can switch to the YSJ trip!

When will I hear back if I got accepted to the YSJ program?

Our team goal is to have all of the acceptances emailed out by the end of November. Due to the increased amount of applicants, make sure you get your application in as soon as possible!

How hard is this application process?

Due to the increased demand for our YSJ trips, the application process has changed. This year applicants will be required to write a 500-750 word essay and submit the application form in order to be considered for placement within the YSJ program. Aside from supplying basic contact information and indicating your trip preferences, you will also have the opportunity to share your leadership and extracurricular experiences and answer a few short answer questions.

I'm only interested in YSJ. What do I need to do to apply?

You will need to go to the HEFY lottery registration page and select YSJ as your number 1 choice for trip. Then complete and submit the YSJ application during the period of October 14 - November 1, 2019. There will be rolling admissions, and decisions will be communicated no later than December 1.

What sort of paperwork or documents do I need to fill out before my trip?

Once accepted, every participant will receive a checklist when they register that will include all of the needed documents and their due dates. These documents include the Participant Agreement, Parent information, Health Forms, Personal Photo, Insurance Card, and a Domestic Flight Itinerary. It is very important that these documents are turned in on time so that the YSJ office can move forward with the planning of these expeditions!

Do I need a passport or a visa?

You will definitely need a passport as you will be traveling outside of the United States. If you don’t have a current one, you will want to apply for one as soon as possible. You also need to make sure that your passport expires at least 6 months after your trip ends or else you won’t be admitted into the country! You do not need a visa for YSJ.

Is it safe to travel to Jerusalem and the surrounding areas?

Your safety is our first priority. Itineraries are created down to the detail and locations are scouted prior to the trips to assure the safety of each aspect. Each of our Trip Leaders have lived and studied in the Holy Land and are highly experienced. Each Trip Leader has led multiple HEFY trips in the past and proven themselves to be competent, responsible, and outstanding. Our Trip Leaders really are the cream of the crop! During the trips, our office staff are in constant communication with the Trip Leaders to ensure they have everything they need and to help if any challenges do arise. In the case of an emergency, our Trip Leaders are trained to ensure group safety, and our office will contact families to update them on the situation. Due to the heightened geopolitical climate, we also register with the State Department and constantly monitor State Department advisories as well.
